After going through Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius; the roman stoic emperor – here are some of the take outs I got from his personal writings.
Some seem a bit ‘obvious’, but it is a good reminder to some life basics, and I found interesting how we all share a common human condition since thousands of years ago.
This guy was living in the first 100 years after Christ, and his thoughts continue to be influential to the present day.
Do we really change so much if we continue to be so much of the same?
We are only here for a brief moment. We have to live life knowing it will end tomorrow.
We only have this mere moment right now. The past has gone by and the future is unknown. The only way to know it, is by carving our way within the present moment.
“Be a good man”. I’m not a man, but of course, this is the journal of a MALE emperor.
Have and practice justice.
Be good to the others.
Treat people with respect.
Don’t try to make other feel less. There is no need on why bringing others down to bring oneself to a higher position when one seeks for the common good.
Live under your own means, knowing what you have to do, looking after yourself, and helping society.
Nothing can ever really be bad if it is part of nature.
Everything that happens, happens because it has to, and it’s the natural order of things.
If we complain why something didn’t happen or it hasn’t happened, it is part of the cycle it follows.
Nature doesn’t go again itself. It simply follows its path and cycles.
Changes are nature.
Everything changes all the time in every single moment.
Nothing is static.
Change is not bad, it’s part of life’s cycle.
We all die, and we shall not fear what is a natural part of life.
We will all be forgotten.
We have to know that so many people have died before us and after us, and we have no idea who we are.
We are mere specks of dust in the vastly wide and constantly expanding universe.
We can only live for ourselves, and to trying to leave a mark of who we were and what we were doing in this planet, knowing, eventually, I’ll disappear or become forgotten. Just as smoke disappears in the air, as fire ceases, as water dries. We will come back to where we come from, earth.
Underneath us is the people who have parted this planet. The people who came before us. We will be one of them someday.
Living 100 years and 2 might as well be the same. Nothing will really be different from these experiences. It’s not just how much time, but what we do with the time we have and how do we decide to spend it. It will all be the same, in this matter. Things will change, but it will be the same.
We all belong to the same big mass, the Whole (the universe). We are the Whole and the Whole is us. We are a part of the Whole and the Whole makes us be a part of it. Everything is interconnected. What is good for the society, is good for the self.
If I work on myself, me and the society will be benefitted. What doesn’t affect the society, should not affect the individual. We are a web of connected people, and everything (again) is interconnected. We should constantly think on the temporariness of things, people, events, and life. As well as how things unfold one after the other.
We are a brief moment. It’s a blink of en eye between the moment we are born, and the moment we die. Do not take life for granted.
Not being like your enemy is the best revenge. Be the bigger person and do good.
In general, he simply focuses on following his own path and dealing with problems with greatness and ease. Constantly reminding himself this will all soon be over, and that was it.
He mentioned how fame is not a thing to look after, as well as money, and status.
These things come by default when one looks after being the bigger person.
And again, why seek on being recognized and famous when in the end, you will die. All of it will be for nothing, because one day, people will forget you, just the same way you have never thought of all of the people who have died before yourself and big people, we might not even remember these days, have simply vanished from our memory.
Not to say, don’t do anything with your life because you will die, but the other way. Live your life like it was your last day.
No one has a day in which they know they will die. They simply will. All of us.
It could be tomorrow.
We constantly give for granted we open the eyes every single morning.
Living life in a way that is meaningful for you, working on yourself to be a better person to YOURSELF and the rest of society.
Simply, knowing that everything is following its natural order, we are all part of it, nature is a part of us and we are all of it. We are nature.
We might die tomorrow, or by the end of the day. What time is there ti waste? Is there really any ‘wasted time’? If we come here to live and experiment with the human experience?
Live up to your own values.
We are a speck of dust about to be blown away. Knowing that, you still have time to mind other peoples’ business other than your own?
Live your life kid. 🙂
You only got one shot in this body. 🙂
Better make up for it.
You are just on time.
Thank you for reading me.
I send you love and light.
