It’s in front of us all the time. We have it already. We tend to sit and wait until it comes for us, whatever it might be, but we have walked blindly all this time. It’s standing on the tip of our toes the whole time. The big ending is near and no one will escape. What a relief, isn’t it?
To know the world is going to end, is such a bliss. All the chaos, all of the dystopia, carelessness, pain, sins, regrets, mistakes, and all the wrong doings, will go with us. And even so, we continue to live in this world and worry about this so much all the time.
The end. The end. The end.
So scary! Thinking it will all end. And why is it so? If nothing is really going to happen. Everything we have ever come close to knowing will disappear in front of our blind sight, and then what? Nothing. The universe will continue to exist in whatever matter it is.
Everything is on the verge of becoming stardust again, one of the only things everything comes from. And so we might as well proof Nitszche’s theory of the eternal return. Therefore, we will live again. We will come back in a different shape, color, form, mind, context, and blank canvas for the memories to fill the space within again. Same old fool mistakes we haven’t learnt from, and so forth. Nothing we don’t really know. Simply to exist again.
We, selfish beings, tend to think the world revolves around us. ‘Oh no no no, I don’t think that’ would say any fool. Yet, when it comes to thinking of the final day, the last explosion, a big blast of glazing fire growing and burning our raw and very much vivid skin, the first thing that comes to mind most is being in pain. The feeling of feeling how every inch of one’s skin roasts slowly and melts to the raging heat. Forget the lover, the family, or the friends. We become these distant and egoistic creatures immediately. Without even giving it a mere thought! Where does empathy come when we know everything is going to be doomed? For what? Thinking about the one next to you suffering just as you, what will that even be helpful for? Some will get the chance to grab the hand of the one they love, if any of those lucky bastards realize the blessing or disguise they have to be able to simply have a hand to hold until the end of everything. Drop a tear together, have one last look into each other’s eyes, and become the same dust as the rest of everything to be ever known. The rest of us can burn with our own flesh and meet them in the same destination, wherever that might be.
The final judgment day has been described and imagined by many. Some think a black angel will come down from the bright heavens and divide the world in the ones who have not obeyed the word of God in one side, the sinners, and the ones who have tactfully respected his words and commandments.
Oh you well behaved children of God! Oh yes! Oh yes! Oh yes! Who are the good boys and girls now?
Go and grab your toy! We’ll come to you to heaven soon baby! Go fetch.
And the rascals, the devils on earth, don’t deserve to have a piece of heaven. They got it. They were the impatient ones. Not waiting for the final day in order to get to heaven. Which fool would decide to not do something in life? Who is really the wrong one: the patient one which waits for the end and represses itself unconsciously most of its life, or the one that dares to give it all in a moment of this short spasm?, sorry; life.
Others who don’t believe in any higher power, might think that a huge explosion will blind us all and end with everything, even before we have time to think that it is ending. Many people will be in the same office they have been going to for the last 35 years, and suddenly they are just mere consciousness, talking with their passed on relatives on the ethereal world. All of them, a simple speck.
Would it be that bad for the world to end then?
A crazy guy might start burning an entire city on fire, and it would feel like the end. But it really wouldn’t be. At least not for everyone. But again; when it comes to oneself, it is the entire world, for each of the selves. It would all become so absurd. More than it is nowadays! The system would collapse (finally), but fear would lead to ultimate freedom. Sounds good? One must be careful what one must wish for because it can be true. Liberty sounds different in everyones’ mind. People would show their truest mask and be shameless about it. In the end, all of this is ending sooner than later.
People would make the time to say all the crap they have been feeling about their shitty boss, call their missed and long longed lover and say how much they have loved them all this time, go naked on the street, light fireworks in the terrace of a 6-floor building, rob banks (what would all that money even be for now?), quit from that toxic job, tell their mother-in-law that they never really liked their bland and tasteless apple pie (she won’t come after anyone in the afterlife, if there is anyone to come to anyway), break that absurdly unsustainable diet, take one full acid tab, scream an honest and relieving ‘FUCK YOU!’ outside the window, and God knows what else.
Some might go and cover themselves up to their head under the blanket in their bed to not see anything and hide in one of the safest places on earth, others might pray to whoever or whatever they believe in, others might laugh louder than they ever have, the sick would maybe thank for their suffering to end soon, religious cults will tell everyone how much they were waiting for this to happen and how they tried warning everyone since such a long time ago, the kids might cry or ask for the last bedtime story, and animals will feel it before anyone else does. They’ll crawl up their hole or shove their tail between their legs and shiver in absolute fear. It’s a matter of where we will choose to be when it ends and with whom, if there is even anyone to be with on this day.
Whatever shape or form this might take the day it does come, nothing will really happen to anyone. The planets will continue to go around the Sun (if it is not the one exploiting), galaxies and universes will continue to exist, time will continue to be something we can barely manage to understand, and the stars will continue to shine. What’s the worry then? We will all meet the diseased ones laying on the other side and be able to have a talk with them again, while we recognize what we have simply been all this time: stardust and energy. We will hang up there and realize how stupid we were most of the time, while being able to roam around and do anything a combination of these two matters do. Maybe it just exists and that’s it.
There’ll be a brighter other side, perhaps. We just fear the unknown.
And it’s funny how much we love what we fear and the other way around.
We just don’t know, and there is nothing wrong with that. We just have to wait and see (or not).
Only thing we can be sure, is that finally Kafka will have a chance to go to Milena’s door in Vienna and tell her the infamous words he always wished to tell her: ““Come with me, Milena. We are going to love each other without scruples or fear or restraint. Because the world is ending tomorrow.” Perhaps we don’t love unreasonably because we think we have time, or have to reckon with time. But what if we don’t have time? Or what if time, as we know it, is irrelevant? Ah, if only the world were ending tomorrow. We could help each other very much.” (Letters to Milena, 1952). And not only him, but how many would want to say the same to someone as their last action? Right before the end of the world. Maybe it would not be so bad that it finally ended then.
